Decision making time -- do you want Abuse Liability Insurance for GOWC-C?

You're invited to contribute to the decision about whether GOWC-C should have Abuse liability insurance.

We've have gotten the new information that it is possible to continue having other types of insurance WITHOUT having abuse liability insurance. So we're now at a point of needing to make a decision about whether we want abuse liability insurance.  This is a complex issue with multiple factors to consider. An email has been sent out that provides information to inform your decision (about 15 minutes of reading). If you’d like to be a part of the decision we invite you to take the time to read the resources and respond to the questions below by Monday  Feb.20. We are hoping to make a decision, based on the community's feedback at the Mar.15 DMC meeting.

Questions:

1) Are you comfortable with the financial costs of not having insurance? (Reflection question)

2) Are you comfortable with the non-financial/relational costs of having insurance? (Reflection question)

3) Having weighed all the factors would you recommend that GOWC-C decide to go with abuse liability insurance or without abuse liability insurance. Please briefly explain your decision.

Please email your responses to Tessa or contact a safe church member (Tessa, Rachel, Sarah, Jake, Amanda or Lena) if you'd like to talk.

Entering into the Season of Lent

Shrove Tuesday - Feb.28

Ash Wednesday - Mar.1, 7:30 p.m.

Lent, the 40-day season of preparation for marking the death of Jesus, begins with Ash Wednesday and ends with the celebration of Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday. Lent is a time for personal reflection and taking stock. Advent, the four weeks before Christmas, is also an opportunity for reflection, but has been described as a time where we wait with expectation for the coming of Christ. Lent is more somber season of soul searching and repentance, and has been described as a time where God waits for our return.

Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Tuesday, Mardi Gras) is the day before Ash Wednesday, a day that started in medieval times when Christians ate up all the foods (butter, eggs, cream meat) they felt were inappropriate to eat during the solemn days of Lent.

At the Ash Wednesday service we receive ashes on our foreheads as a reminder that we are created from dust and to dust we shall return.

During Lent we follow Jesus, observing his adult ministry and in the last week of Lent, Holy Week, we focus on his suffering and death.

Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving in Lent

At the Ash Wednesday Service we will hear the scripture (Matthew 6:1-6,16-18) where Jesus speaks of what we know to be three Lenten practices, prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

These practices can be useful…they can spark conversations, focus our spiritual attention, help us set new priorities or deepen our commitment to the things in life we value. But they are the means to an end, not the end in itself.

Some suggestions:

- If we give up something or fast, let our self-denial help us recognize our need for God, and God’s goodness in providing our daily bread. Let this sacrifice lead us to thankfulness for the many small things we enjoy on a daily basis that are from God, whose generosity is the source of all kindness.

-If we commit to a deeper prayer life our vision of ourselves and the world may change. Let us be open to see God’s presence at work in our daily lives in a new way, perhaps new consolation in hard times, a new awareness of God’s compassion, a need for forgiveness and reconciliation with another, a new commitment to pray for our world.

-If we give more of our time or our money in acts of charity, let us see remember that Jesus washed the feet of his friends and called us to care for our neighbours in the same way we care for ourselves. Let us be grateful for the practical opportunity to perhaps more deeply understand the Lord, who is love.

These are a few events and suggestions that may help you in observing Lent, but remember, they are merely externals.  The purpose of Lent is not to better yourself though your own efforts, but to acknowledge your powerlessness and let Jesus work in you and transform you with His love.  What is important is what happens in your own searching and praying and turning back to God “with all your heart.”

Please Join us for our Ash Wednesday Service:

Wednesday, February 25th - 7:30PM

Come to our worship space for a contemplative service, which will include singing, three quiet areas with adequate time for personal reflection, and the receiving of ashes. All are welcome, but children need to be able to sit quietly for about an hour.

Winter CampFebruary 24 - 26, is just around the corner. Melanie is accepting registration forms complete with a 50% deposit. We are welcome at Gimli Bible Camp after 5 pm on Friday, for a time of relaxation, indoor and outdoor activities, sharing meals, worship, and new memories. There is still opportunity to get involved: if you are interested in leading an activity, please let Gabrielle know. The food committee, Lynda, Tabitha and Linda, are looking for people to be involved in meal preparation.  If you are wondering about what to bring – your list should include warm outdoor clothing for broomball, skiing, and walking; indoor clothing and shoes for the gym, bedding and towels for your family’s needs and your personal items. You may want to consider a water bottle or travel mug for your personal use. If you need a map or directions, talk to Linda.  Please talk to Gabrielle, Melanie or Linda if you want to be involved.
